• A recurring transfer from checking to savings the day after payday
• Split direct deposit: ask your employer to send part of each paycheck straight to savings
• Round-up features some banks offer on debit card purchases

Make it stick

• Start with an amount you won't miss, then raise it every few months
• Keep savings at a different bank if you're tempted to dip in
• Name the account "Emergency Fund" so its job is clear
