Why an emergency fund matters more than you think
It turns a crisis into an inconvenience.
Most money problems start with a surprise: a car repair, a medical bill, a gap between jobs. Without savings, the surprise goes on a credit card or a loan, and the cost keeps growing. An emergency fund breaks that chain.
What it does
- Pays for surprises without new debt
- Gives you time to make good decisions in a job loss
- Protects the rest of your budget and your other goals
- Lowers money stress, which is worth a lot on its own
What it isn't
- An investment: its job is to be safe and reachable, not to grow fast
- A vacation fund or a holiday fund: those are planned expenses with their own savings
- Something you need all at once: a small fund helps right away
